The Statement – Typography in Web Design

By Larry Ball - Web Developer at Xapsis Integrated Marketing

I have heard the saying that web designers should know some code, but the reality today is that web developers need to understand fundamentals of good web design.  So let’s take a look at a very powerful aspect of web design...typography.

Anything that has an impact on how your message is communicated and how people feel about that message is an important factor in marketing. Typeface choices can make a huge impact on how the message is conveyed.

Setting a tone typically involves titles and headings where text is larger. Font selection should take into consideration, the tone and meaning beyond the message in the words. There is also formality vs. informality of the message which will carry along the feel of the typeface.

Designers use scale and type as the art itself to great effect as well. Masculinity vs. femininity is another continuum to consider in typeface selection.

Overall, the project has to be thought of in terms of branding, of which typeface is critical. When you consider common brands such as Coca-Cola, The New Yorker, FedEx, etc. – how you feel about those brands would likely change if their logo’s typeface changed tomorrow!

I am fortunate to work with designers at Xapsis that have a great talent with typography. I invite you to come check some really great designs and sites on Our Work site.
